Abstract

The present study was undertaken with a specific objective of assessing the knowledge and utilization pattern about ICT projects of the farmers and getting suggestions from farmers to improve effectiveness of ICTs. This study was carried out to ascertain farmers' knowledge of information and communication technology (ICT) projects in the Belgaum district of Karnataka. Information Communication Technology (ICT) plays significant role in agricultural development by making information available at a cost-effective rate, providing access to global best practices and enhancing productivity. Among the several ICT projects now in operation, four were chosen for the study: Kisan call centre (KCC), e-Choupal, Krishi Marata Vahini, and Raith Mitra Kendra's web portal. A random sample of 140 respondents was chosen and personally interviewed using a pre-tested program. It was observed that the majority of respondents (40.00%) had a strong awareness of KCC, followed by e-Choupal (39.29%) and Krishi Marata Vahini (37.14%), but a poor understanding of Raith Mitra Kendra (30.71%). It was shown that the majority of farmers with extensive knowledge of ICT projects were young (53.33%), followed by middle-aged (22.03%), and elderly (15.69%). Further, the study also revealed that farmers were utilising Kisan Call Centre for information regarding crop protection (47.86%), quality inputs (30.71%), weather information (30.71 %), cultivation practices (30.71%) and livestock (29.29%). In case of e-Choupal, farmers were utilising it mostly for information regarding market prices (46.43%), weather information (39.29%), cultivation practices (37.14%), crop protection (34.29%) and livestock (27.14%). Regarding Krishi Marata Vahini, 61.73 per cent of respondents were utilizing its information service for market prices. With respect to Raith Mitra Kendra, most of the farmers were using its information for crop protection (32.14%), cultivation practices (27.14%), quality inputs (24.29%), weather information (22.86%) and Irrigation practices (20%)Most of the farmers were having low knowledge of ICT projects that needed special attention to make them well informed of functioning of these projects. Farmers should be trained to improve their knowledge and skills in order to effectively use ICTs to obtain up-to-date agricultural information.
