Abstract

Industrial effluents consist of heavy metal causes major damage to the existing environment and leads to many health problems to aquatic species as well as to human beings. To overcome this problem, heavy metal toxicity can be reduced by bioremediation of the soil and water. The purpose of the present study was to investigate about the presence of heavy metal resistant bacteria from Yamuna river barrages for bioremediation process. Isolates of heavy metal resistant bacteria were biochemically and molecularly characterized by using 16S rDNA Gene Sequencing. Isolates of Bacillus sp. Sphingomonas sp and Stenotrophomonas sp were found to be most prominent ones, found to be present in the Yamuna river barrages and has also shown the resistance against heavy metals such as zinc, lead, iron and cobalt. It can be concluded that isolated heavy metal resistant bacteria from Yamuna river barrages can be utilized as bioremediation agent for future prospective.
