Abstract

The aim of the present study is to investigate the anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative activity of leaves aqueous extract of infected (TMV, tobacco mosaic virus) tobacco plant (Nicotiana tabacum). To achieve this objective, variable doses of leaves aqueous extract of TMV tobacco plant exposed to human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) at different time intervals (1 h, 24 h and 72 h) using hepatitis B vaccine (HBsAg) as standard and measured the monocyte derived macrophages, forward scatter (shape and size) and side scatter (granularity of the cell) of PBMC using flow cytometry. The results showed that the TMV tobacco plant aqueous extract exposed human PBMC showed markedly decline (with or without stimulation of HBsAg) in the number of monocytes derived macrophages count, forward scatter but there is enhancement of side scatter in PBMC at higher doses as compared to control. HBsAg used as standard for these immunopharmacological studies and it seems that there is markedly decline in number of macrophages in human PBMC, forward scatter but there is declining of side scatter. Overall, this study suggests that the leaves aqueous extract of TMV tobacco plant showed anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative activity.
