Abstract

Intelligent Transport System is the need of the hour due to the increasing number of deaths and injuries on the roads and the latest network based paradigm that supports and enhances the capabilities of Intelligent Transport System is Vehicular Ad hoc Network. They can be used to improve road safety and transport efficiency as well as entertain people moving on the roads. Locating a vehicle’s location, i.e. localization is an important aspect and a challenging issue for Vehicular Ad hoc Networks. In this paper, we look to review various localization techniques for vehicular ad-hoc networks as at a given instant of time, locating the exact position of vehicles that possibly might be moving at great speeds on the roads can be exigent. New localization techniques for these kinds of networks are emerging while a few are already in place. We have surveyed a number of these localization techniques and understand that no single technique might be sufficient in all respects but ad hoc localization is found to be good on accuracy and availability and does not call for explicit ground based infrastructure.
