Abstract

In the recent years, concepts such as e-learning and mobile learning (m-learning) have emerged. Mobile learning is a type of learning in which the learner is predetermined, it does not have a fixed place and makes use of the opportunities provided by mobile technologies. Teaching applications which have become individualized under the influence of mobile learning will become a state of learning which defines individuals suitable for information society that may cause areas such as in-depth learning or gravitating towards specialization and intensifies mutual interaction and speeds up research, together with standard learning. The study aims to investigate the effect of android applications developed for "Atom and Periodic System" Unit in 9th grade chemistry curriculum, on students' attitudes towards mobile learning, attitudes towards chemistry, academic achievement. The pre-test post test quasi experimental design was used in the study. The study was conducted in a high school in Kahramanmaraş Turkey, which was chosen by convenience sampling method. The sample of the study consisted of 90 9th grade students. The students in the experimental groups were taught by mobile learning applications and the students in the control group were taught by traditional lecturing method. Prior to the treatment, Chemistry Achievement Test (CAT), Chemistry Motivation Scale (CMS) and Mobile Learning Attitude Scale (MLAS), constructed by the researcher were administered to the groups as pre-test. After the treatment, the same instruments were re-administered to the experimental and control groups as post test. The treatment lasted for six weeks in all groups. At the end of the treatment, the academic success, motivation of students in chemistry and students’ attitude towards mobile learning in the experiment group improved significantly when compared to their counterparts in the control group. This shows that Mobile Learning Approach was more effective in the teaching and learning of concepts of atomic and periodic system in Chemistry. Therefore, chemistry teachers should search for the suitable mobile learning opportunities while designing learning environments.
