Introduction: Non-communicable diseases are proving as exponentially growing problem all over the world. Diabetes mellitus is one such disorder demonstrating an alarming trend of rapid increase, posing a substantial worldwide challenge. Though, conventional medicines are available, ancient medical systems like Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani may give cheaper yet more potential options. Thus, present review aims at elaboration of some plants mentioned in Ayurveda for their probable efficacy in management of Diabetes mellitus (can be correlated to Madhumeha mentioned in Ayurveda classics).
Materials and Methods: The review of Ayurveda classics (Charaka Samhita, Shushruta Samhita, Ashtanga Hridaya and Bhavaprakash Nighantu). Relevant published articles from indexed scientific journals were collected, reviewed and analysed. The search words used are ‘Diabetes’ ‘Ayurveda’ and ‘Prameha’.
Conclusion: It is evident from the review that herbs mentioned in management of Prameha, can be proved beneficial in management of Diabetes mellitus. Single herb has been proved to have multiple mechanism to lower blood sugar and improve insulin sensitivity. Herbs mentioned have various phytoconstituents which aids to the effect.
